Lesson 1: Kick

Main Topic: Kick

Instruments: Kick

Techniques: EQing, compression, mono vs stereo, saturation, sound design 

Issues: Boomy kick, weak kick, not enough punch, boxy kick, too strong kick, too loud kick

Lesson 2: Bass, Sub-bass, low-end balance

Main Topic: Bass and Sub bass

Instruments: Bass, Sub-bass

Techniques: EQing, compression, stereo-width manipulation, saturation

Issues: bassy track, too muddy track, not groovy enough, phasing issues

Lesson 3: Percussions, hi-hats, stabs and groove

Main Topic: Groove and drums

Instruments: low toms, toms, snares, hi-hats, cymbals, rides, sound effects, sweeps, fillers

Techniques: layering, recording, VSTs, stereo imaging, EQing, compression, saturation, filtering, automation, waveform analysis, limiters

Issues: percussion is weak, lack of groove, sounds are too loud or too silent, not enough impact, sharp cymbals, too much noise

Lesson 4: Leads, synthesizers and vocals

Main Topic: Synthesizers and Vocals

Instruments: Lead sound, pads, atmosphere, vocals, vocal FXs

Techniques: modular synthesizers, VSTs, stereo width expanders, EQing, compression, stereo width expansion, De-esser, recording

Issues: sounds taking too much space, kick is not audible anymore, lead is weak, sounds are clashing, vocal is weak, vocal is too boomy, vocal sounds cheap

Lesson 5: Arrangement fixes and balancing

Main Topic: Balancing

Instruments: all

Techniques: EQing, filtering, compression, automation, waveform analysis, limiters

Issues: not enough impact, boring arrangement, the mix needs the final edit, the mix is still not there

Lesson 6: Finalizing the mix

Main Topic: Finalizing the mix

Techniques: waveform analysis, A/B testing, EQing and all others

Issues: the mix is not yet there, I miss the last 1% to fine-tune my mix

After the last tests and fixes, we’ll send your track to our mastering engineer, Mattias Fridell. He’ll provide additional feedback and a personal opinion to support your future productions.

Our methodology

With years of experience in mixing and mastering music for clients, along with personalized instruction, the team at Plugin Music has developed a teaching approach that addresses the common challenges faced by producers. The course features a small group format, limited to just four students, providing a perfect balance between individual attention and peer feedback. This intimate setup fosters a collaborative learning environment where students can share ideas and refine their work together.

Introducing your Teacher, Michal Basar

Michal Basar, founder of Plugin Music, has been producing music for 15 years and has actively mentored aspiring techno producers for the past  years. With a passion for teaching, he has worked closely with students on a 1-on-1 basis, honing his understanding of their unique needs and challenges.

Throughout this time, Michal has identified recurring patterns in the obstacles faced by producers, allowing him to fine-tune his teaching methodology. His dual experience as a producer and mentor has made him highly effective in guiding students through their musical journeys. Michal’s primary goal is to help students finish tracks and achieve their full potential as techno producers.

As an artist, Michal has released music on notable labels including AEDI Records, Northallsen Records, Arnaca Records, and Mai Lei Bel. He has performed in clubs and raves across the Netherlands, Italy, Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Germany, showcasing both DJ sets and live performances. His sets vary between slow, tribal hypnotic rhythms and faster tempos, depending on the setting.

Additionally, Michal has gained valuable insights into the business side of music through his work with a renowned record distributor company Triple Vision, further enriching his understanding of the industry. As the founder of Plugin Music and co-founder of Arnaca Records, he has developed a valuable network mostly in Europe and America, thanks to his long-term activities in the music scene.

Additional information

Interaction and engagement

Each lesson will include hands-on activities, A/B testing, critical listening exercises, and opportunities for your engagement. We will analyze, discuss and improve the sound together and individually. The project-based approach will significantly increase your understanding of concepts learned in each lesson, thanks to continuous feedback and your constant improvement.

Required materials

You should have access to a laptop with your preferred music production software, essential plugins, and headphones for an optimal learning experience. During the classes, you will work with our studio monitors as well as your headphones to ensure you can effectively use your techno track outside the studio.

Prerequisites

We expect you to have a basic knowledge of music production software and terminology. You should already know how to make music, even if you don’t consider it professional yet.
